" SANGRE DI CRISTO MOONRISE "

( New Mexico Abstracts Series )

Original Mixed Media Painting: Acrylic, Gouache, and Watercolor on Winsor & Newton Watercolor Paper.     Image Size:7 x 8.50 inches     Framed Size: 13.5 x 17.5 inches (museum mounted)

My stylized abstracted view through the tops of the pine trees to the snow covered Sangre Di Cristo mountains settling in to their evening blues and grays, with a huge golden moonrise back lit by the famous brilliant blazing red sunset. This phenomenal blood red sky was named by Spanish Explorers "Sangre Di Cristo" or "The Blood Of Christ" for it's awesome ethereal beauty and supernatural power.

I went for high contrast with nearly silhouetted dark Flow Acrylic pine tress against a middle ground of Acrylic Gouache blue and gray mountain forms, the deep sky laid in "Wet into Wet" of Acrylic and Watercolor. Both the Snow and the Moon have more textural slightly impasto brushwork for added dimensional affect.

" SANTA FE BLUES "

( New Mexico Abstracts Series )

Original Mixed Media Painting: Acrylic, Gouache, and Watercolor on Winsor & Newton Watercolor Paper.     Image Size: 6.75 x 7.75 inches     Framed Size: 12.5 x 15.5 inches (museum mounted)

In this NEW 2010 piece I placed the bright luminous blue forms built up with many thin Acrylic Paint washes, against highly textural dry brush layers over blended washes "Wet into Wet" of Acrylic and Watercolor, plus a few small brushwork passages in Acrylic Gouache to enhance the textural affects.

" TAOS TWILIGHT "

( New Mexico Abstracts Series )

Original Mixed Media Painting: Acrylic, Gouache, and Watercolor on Winsor & Newton Watercolor Paper.     Image Size: 5 x 6 inches     Framed Size: 10.5 x 13.5 inches (museum mounted)

An abstract impression from colorful memories of a late fall sunset I experienced in Taos New Mexico. I used various luminous "Wet into Wet" Acrylic and Watercolor washes, plus a few small brushwork passages in Acrylic Gouache to heighten the "Push-Pull" textural affects I remembered between the eclectic Adobe Architecture, Evergreen Pines, and Flaming Red Sky plunging into darkness. The finished piece has random spontaneity opposing tighter more controlled areas, using variably weighted shapes and heightened color values, to form an overall balanced and unified modern composition.
